Security Guarding to make a difference, a sign of the times!

Leonie and Terry are already practicing their signing on each other and other members of staff including teaching us all our own names in sign language!

Not just Security Guards! Security Guards who “Sign”!

Two members of our security team at The Lanes Shopping Centre in Carlisle are certainly relishing a new training initiative set up after an idea from a member of staff who loves to make a difference, Terry experienced a few occasion where he felt he could have been more helpful in his job if he had signing skill. As a result Terry and Leonie have embarked on an 8 week sign language course at the Adult Education College in Carlisle. Fair credit to both of them.

Ian Proudfoot, the AM Support Services manager at The lanes told us about the idea:

“I was originally approached by Terry some time ago he said how good it would be if some of the staff where able to use sign language, after a bit of digging we found this local course which we advertised to all staff, we then picked Terry and Leonie to be the first to attend, we do hope that other staff will be able to attend in the future.”

The course gives a real insight into deaf culture and will highlight the basic principles of British Sign Language. Leonie and Terry will be able to understand simple signs and reply back to them, learn the importance of facial expression and body language and demonstrate a clear use of hand shapes.

We look forward to hearing how the went on in 8 weeks time.
